Our home was struck by lightening last month. The electrical got fried, our chimney top exploded, and a sizable hole was punched through our roof, in addition to some other damage to property. We've already begun running into problems contacting the insurer. The agent has been switched twice since we filed, the latest said he was a temp and provided me a Yahoo email address for contact... which bounced, naturally. The company (Pacific Specialty Insurance Co.) seems reputable, but I'm worried that we will get the usual run around from these guys. The fire fighters that responded to the scene recommended we get the electrical looked at ASAP, which we did after confirming with our insurance the need to go ahead on that front for safety reasons. The upfront cost for the electrical was $10K. We haven't moved on the roof or chimney yet because we haven't the liquid funds to do so. I worry about the rainy season coming and its impact on an exposed roof--tarps aren't really a great substitute for a solid roof. My question is whether or not it is in our best interest to consult an attorney in order to prevent this claim from being dragged out for many months of painful bureaucratic weaseling. If so, does anyone have any idea what kind of lawyer one should consult and how much we can expect it to cost? Any and all help on how to help expedite this process is very much appreciated.

I ended up scratching the corner of my car after trying to get into the only parking spot available (some guy was over the line). It was on a chain link fence, no one got hurt, and I only have to worry about paying my problems, no one else's. I'm 19 and use my parent's USAA insurance. I went in for an estimate to see if it would be possible to cover it without using my insurance at all, but the damage was apparently worse than I thought, as they quoted about $1,550. I could potentially cover this with my upcoming paycheck (I think, don't know for sure), but would it be better to pay for it myself or use the deductible from USAA and see my parent's insurance rise? I know there are a lot of variables, but how much could our insurance potentially increase?
